Longhorn cattle descended from cattle brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers and settlers and can be traced back to the second voyage of Christopher Columbus as early as 1493!
For hundreds of years Longhorn cattle escaped and spread across the Americas living in semi-feral herds which gave them a high tolerance for stresses related to feed/water shortage and drought.
Longhorn cattle have an unmatched resistance to disease and parasites and can easily survive on marginal pastures in harsh climates that other breeds of cattle cannot.
Longhorns mature early, they are incredibly fertile and make great mothers, many having calves into their 20's! Calves are born very small (40lbs +/-) without any human intervention and are up drinking their mother's milk before they're dry. This has been bred into them from living in the wild and having to get on the move immediately after calving to avoid predators. Often a longhorn mother cow will hide their calf in a safe spot so the calf can sleep while she grazes close by.
Finishing Longhorns is different from finishing any other breed of cattle and is definitely a labour of love. You simply cannot push a Longhorn to grow faster. They take more time to feed-out PROPERLY and we (Buhler Beef) have created a very specific feed ration designed to enhance the marbling and flavour that sets our beef apart from any other beef on the market today.
Our steers do not have a certain 'days on feed' schedule, they are fed until they are finished to our extremely high standard and some steers just take a little longer than others.
Our emphasis is on producing a premium, consistent quality beef on a continual basis, not seeing how fast we can get them out the door.
People don't buy our beef because it is cheaper, you can find cheaper beef...
But you will not find better beef!
